The demolition of a large chunk of the condemned westbound Washington Bridge went "according to plan," according to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation.
Video of a span of the bridge near the Providence side of the river was widely circulated on social media over the weekend, prompting concerns that something had gone wrong.
"What is shown in the video is planned, controlled demolition conducted in accordance with approved demolition plans," a RIDOT spokesperson said. "The barges – which have been used to catch demolition debris throughout this project, were positioned, according to the plan, under that section of bridge and outfitted with timber and mats to cushion the falling debris. A small amount of debris entered the water."
