Drier Utah winter prompts warnings to take proactive approach to fire mitigation

As Southern Utah experiences a drier-than-average winter, experts recommend home-owners take a proactive approach to fire mitigation during the winter and spring.

Current snowfall levels in the region are hovering at about 30% of the average, a situation that could impact vegetation moisture and wildfire susceptibility.

“Low level snowpack during the winter can lead to drier vegetation, earlier drying of vegetation in certain areas, and can increase wildfire risk in summer,” said Kelly Wickens, Fire Prevention Specialist with Utah Forestry, Fire and State Lands. “With less snow to replenish the soil, grasses, shrubs and trees may dry out faster, creating vegetation that is ready to burn during wildfires.”
